Chungcheong, approved by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as the Candidate City of Korea

2021-07-20

Chungcheong Mega City (Daejeon, Sejong, Chungbuk, Chungnam) secured the approval to host the 2027 Summer WUG at the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST) on 20 July.

The MCST confirmed Chungcheong's bid after deliberation and resolution of the "Deliberation Committee on International Events(DCIE)" chaired by the vice minister of the MCST. The DCIE reviewed the required documents, including a competition management plan, preliminary feasibility study results, Korea Sport & Olympic Committee approval documents, and application for a feasibility study.

Jeon Jung-ae, director of the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Bureau of Chungbuk, presented the strong points of the Chungcheong 2027 WUG as the world's first low-cost, high-efficiency WUG at the DCIE. The presentation highlighted a critical aspect that the Chungcheong 2027 WUG would be in sync with the International University Sports Federation(FISU)'s three primary themes for the WUG: vision, sustainability, and legacy.

Chungcheong will proceed with the approval process of the Ministry of Economy and Finance to receive the state's financial support and then submit a letter of intent to host the 2027 Summer WUG to FISU in September.

The four Chungcheong governors unitedly asked for the support of the Korean people and active support from the central government so that the Chungcheong 2027 Summer WUG could promote Korea and Chungcheong to the world and be held as the most successful WUG ever.
