Chungcheong Megacity awarded 2027 FISU World University Games

- Chuncheong won the vote against North Carolina of the United States at the FISU General Assembly on the 12th (Sat) November

Chungcheong Megacity 2027 World University Games Bid committee (hereafter referred to as the "Committee") has succeeded in hosting the 2027 Summer World University Games (formerly the Summer Universiade), which is regarded as one of the "International Mega Sport" events.

 The International University Sports Federation (FISU) confirmed and announced the Chungcheong region of South Korea as the venue for Summer World University Games in 2027 through an executive committee vote in Brussels, Belgium, at 1 p.m. on the 12th (9 p.m. Korean time).

This is the fourth time Korea to host the FISU event after Muju and Jeonju Winter Universiade in 1997, Daegu in 2003, and Gwangju in 2015. 

Chungcheong built its successful bid on pledges of a great presentation as well as great support from over 1 million Chungcheong citizens' signatures. The FISU executive members had impressed also with our vision, a mega-city blueprint, education and culture, IT and technology, environmental preservation, sustainability, and holding a low-cost and high-efficiency competition.

The efforts of the joint delegation of Chungcheong region, which consists of the governors of four cities and provinces in the Chungcheong region, the chairman of the parliament, the chairman of the sports committee, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Sports Council, the Korean University Sports Committee, reporters and bid committee, etc. also shined. As the Chungcheong region was confirmed as the location for the sports event, the joint delegation signed an agreement with the FISU at the site of the general assembly.

Kim Yoon-suk, secretary-general of the committee, said, "It is a rare example for the Chungcheong region to succeed in attracting the event in their first attempt, and I think it was possible because of the passionate wishes of the Korean people." He also remarked that "Chungcheong 2027 will be a great momentum to the development of the Chungcheong region."
